In the recent Manhattan Arts International jured exhibition “The Healing Power of ART 2016” I chose Chelle Destefano, an artist from Australia, to receive The Healing Power of ART & ARTISTS Featured Artist Award. As a staunch advocate for artists who use art as a catalyst to raise awareness I applaud Destefano for her courage to tackle important issues with the interest in promoting positive change. I also selected her for her sense of clarity and amusement and ability to fuse imagination with strong technical skills.
Destefano’s winning painting is titled “Babylon Walk” which speaks volumes. With her entertaining contemporary style and symbolism it brings a biblical story to modern times. By including Donald Trump in the painting it is ripe for endless interpretation, controversy and discussion.
“A deaf artist, I’m in constant change in myself…”
When Destefano submitted her entries to the juried exhibition, which runs through September 20, 2016, she wrote: “A deaf artist, I’m in constant change in myself, and it reflects through my artworks. I communicate via my art, with viewers who connect with not only me but the artworks. As they connect with my art, they find their stories in my artworks. With the world’s constant change, corruption, disconnection, my art is viewers’ reunion with themselves and others.”
She has also written, “My works communicate the relationship between imaginary and true events while I explore the issues that are happening in the world today. My feelings and perceptions on the corruption that has been happening up to today are found throughout ‘Wait of the World’ works and maybe some of the truth is being exposed along with the theories on the transformation of man. What we are waiting for is the age of enlightenment and truth to come to the fore.”
“The Astrological Clock in Prague embodies a sense of relation to the planet,
space, time and the cosmos, and its influence and alignment with
the universe, stars, seasons and ourselves.”
Her Outstanding Career Achievements
Destefano has won numerous honors and accolades. She is the recipient of the prestigious Australian Arts Council grant for her exhibitions in Paris and London. Her artwork is in private and public collections worldwide including the public collection of West Torrens Council.
A pivotal accomplishment in her career was her Port Noarlunga town project for which she created watercolor illustrations of the shops along the main street of the coastal suburb Port Noarlunga, South Australia. “The exhibition had a great turnout with some of the shop owners buying artwork and various locals and interstate buyers snapping up a Port Noarlunga piece,” the artist states. After that project, the council of the historical inner-city suburb Thebarton commissioned her to paint various buildings including houses in the area, followed by a very successful exhibition.
Her many exhibitions include those at the Australian Embassy, London; Gasworks Gallery, Melbourne, Victoria, Severndroogs Castle, UK; and Galerie Metanoia, Paris, France. Her art has been featured in many publications such as Paris Arts magazine.
The painting Wall Street is a commentary on “the greed that extends from Wall Street and the populous’ feelings towards those 1%ers who continue to take and use money as the power.”
Chelle Destafano’s Inspirational Message
Destafno has achieved many accomplishments never allowing her deafness to prevent her from accomplishing her dreams and goals. In an interview with her titled “A Deaf Artist Offers Inspiration” that appears on the Artsy Shark website she stated, “Never let your disability be the barrier to following your dreams; there is always a way. Today with internet and technology easily at hand, there are so many avenues to explore. So get excited, grab the bull by the horns and go for your dreams! Let absolutely no one tell you otherwise or let any negative opinions stop you ever.”
Recently Destefano had some of her illustrations in line art format published as a coloring book. This first edition includes her illustrations created between 2010 and 2016 and is a mixed general theme.
