“After painting realism in oils for years I made the change to oriental brush painting in the Lingnan style which was inspired by studying martial arts/Tai Chi’ for many years. The calming effect of grinding the ink before painting, the energy that is put into throwing ink on paper is just the greatest of pleasures that only this style of art allows me to feel. When I am starting a painting I think of the entire process as active meditation. My body is relaxed yet I am aware of everything.”
Darlene Kaplan is an international and national award-winning artist in the Lingnan style of oriental brush painting. One of her paintings was selected by Lilly Wei, art critic for Art in America magazine for the Manhattan Arts International “Celebrate The Healing Power of Art” exhibition. One of her paintings was accepted into the “HERStory 2017” curated art exhibition from Manhattan Arts International and won an Award of Excellence.
Kaplan teaches ongoing weekly classes and holds a yearly one week workshop. She believes in giving back to the community by holding one day workshops as an introduction to the art in local community areas. Classes usually have around 30 in attendance. She was awarded the #4 for being one of the best artist/instructors in the Washington, DC Metro area.
