Anastessia Bettas Creates “Rewilding” Paintings that Activate Positive Change

By Renee Phillips Leave a Comment

Anastessia Bettas is a remarkable, award-winning artist from Canada who has exhibited extensively there and in the U.S. She applies her inimitable creative talent and passion to raise awareness. Most notably, her “Rewilding” series is “a visual response to natural and urban environments in harmony with inner landscapes to balance chaos and order.” She explains that “Rewilding” is influenced by “the global initiative to restore and conserve the world’s ecosystems such as wetlands, waterways, wildlife and the management of cultural habitats.”

The Healing Power of ART & ARTISTS recognizes and appreciates Anastessia as an admirable creative individual who is helping to activate positive change in the world.

Anastessia’s “Rewilding” series of abstract paintings are important visual expressions that represent the dynamic and evolving activity in the ecosphere. They speak volumes about infrastructure, nature’s power and beauty, and the call for human action. She reminds us how vital it is for us to exercise responsibility, repair damages, and create a compatible coexistence with our environment.

The global term “Rewilding” was initiated by members of the grassroots network named Earth First!, which was founded in the Southwestern U.S. in 1980. In short, its aim is to increase biodiversity and replace human interventions with natural processes. Those who follow the movement desire to create resilient, self-regulating and self-sustaining ecosystems.

Anastessia emphasizes this complex concept through her mesmerizing paintings that integrate myriad combinations of intersecting lines, angles, and patterns. The forms suggest buildings in various stages of convergence and deconstruction as they bend and yield to impenetrable forces and the passage of time. The spatial interrelationships spark energy and interest.

In contrast to the structural shapes in her paintings we observe patches of green and yellow that appear as if to symbolize those areas of nature that remain and hopefully may be in the process of regeneration. Open spaces also emerge to lift our gaze into the distance and above and induce states of contemplation and reflection.

Anastessia is also proficient in creating a plethora of luscious tactile surfaces in her use of encaustic, acrylic paint and other media. These multi-dimensional physical terrains invite us to navigate, explore, and ponder ways to construct a better future.

Aesthetically beautiful, Anastessia’s paintings may also be perceived as exquisite images of harmony and contrast. Like a perfectly composed symphony her compositions breathe and vibrate, compress and expand, and offer endless hours of inspiration and revelation.

Anastessia explains, “My intention is to encourage an emotional narrative by creating a sense of contemplation and inviting viewers to explore and engage the interconnectedness of nature and their inner landscapes with references to the wonders and beauty of the natural and built environment.”
