The Powerful Impact of Color: Color affects your behavior, moods, and thoughts. Your reactions to colors are often deeply personal and rooted in your own experiences. A certain color has the ability to conjure up a profound memory, soothe your frazzled nerves when you feel agitated, motivate and empower you to take action when you are in a state of lethargy, and bring healing energy when you are ailing.
The Importance of Color in Art: Color may be the first quality we notice and respond to when viewing a work of art. It may also be the most important tool artists can use to express their deepest feelings, share their beliefs, convey meaningful messages, and transform viewers intellectually and emotionally.
Artists Express the Importance of Color: As you view the works of art in this exhibition also read the artists’ statements. They explain what they hope to convey to us through their use of color. Also notice how the work of art effects you optically, viscerally, mentally, and spiritually. You will also find at the end of this page find links to some of the many articles we have published about the healing power of color.

Colours and shapes are universal and form a kind of unspoken language that can be interpreted on an energetic level. I am fascinated by the endless revolving rhythms, patterns, and notes found in nature and technology. Primarily I am drawn to relationships and the interconnectedness we all share. It is here that I find an evolution, a growing and moving onwards, a shift which directly affects the tapestry of relationships around me. karibienert

I believe that art connects us to the stories that live in our hearts waiting for an opportunity to be expressed. As an artist, I do this with colours. The choice of colours I use and the interaction between them help set a specific mood and create an emotional feeling. I create oil paintings with rich uplifting colours to tell my stories in the hope that others may connect with them and bring them joy, healing, peace and happiness. agnesjorgensen

My inspiration comes from nature and beautiful and interesting locations. My use of color is based on the emotions I feel about the scene and want to convey to my viewers. I choose a warm orange under layer to express excitement and energy. I select a cool pink undercoat when my intension is a calm and peaceful meditative feeling. Intuitively I mix colors in pure hues for near objects, while muting hues in distant areas to create depth in the painting. ruthsoller

Color is my muse – always in front of my eyes and held deep in my soul. The vibrant hues of nature layered with tints and shades of emotion present endless choices. Time spent mixing colors that feel like me and playing with them on canvas is healing. Life’s palette never stales. It blooms with potential ready to transform and express all states of being. Having the opportunity to visually share possibility is pure joy! studiokarenjohnston

I often utilize cool, subdued, colors in the backgrounds of my work to create cold, yet somehow calming environments within which to place psychologically charged central figures or objects, painted in more intense warm colors. In this way, I draw the viewer in on an emotional level, establish contrast and visually strengthen each image. valeriepatterson.com

When I focus on sounds around me or songs, I see colors. The music and rhythm provide the color palette, and the words may inform the composition. I discovered this when I was in school entering data for experiments on memory. The numbers created a song in my mind, and I would then paint the song. Synesthesia is a crossing of the senses, and this describes how my mixed media work represents a beautiful blending of sounds, nature and science. sandraduranwilson

“Colour plays an important part in my work, as it has an amazing ability to connect people to their experiences, feelings, and emotions. I love nature, and the intent of my work is to shine a light on it and the human heart, so that people feel positively connected to nature and one another. I use colour to evoke positivity, happiness, healing, hope and joy, and my wish is that my work empowers, and gives people a sense of wellbeing.” andrearobinson
Nanette Fluhr
“I am greatly inspired by nature and love capturing the brilliant effects of light and color. When I observe the beautiful play of light on objects whether trees, water, dazzling fabric or subtle color shifts in people’s complexion I am drawn into the moment. The components of color (hue, value and chroma) are important to create warmth and intimacy or drama and boldness. Color and lighting effects are essential in my journey to create portraits and help tell the story of the people I portray.” nanettefluhr.com

Bright colors surround me in my garden and studio and lift my spirits. I am energized by pinks and reds and calmed by blues and purples. Yellows and oranges radiate a sunny atmosphere and cheer me on gray days. My use of composition gold and silver metal leaf backgrounds on my paintings reflects even more color. Color comforts and heals me. joanmetcalf.com
Christine Ilewski
With a studio overlooking the Mississippi, the mighty river resplendent in her moods; so many endless shades of blue water and sky, canary yellow to peachy pink sunsets reflecting in the water as I look west, run now through all my work. Color is my vocabulary when words fail me. Landscape has almost always been the background to my narratives, but in my most recent work it seems to have become my center…a place of reflection, a still point from which everything else revolves. chrisilewski.com

Bright, bold colors in my artwork are like a symphony of emotions and energy. They ignite my creativity and infuse my canvas with life. When I dip my brush into vibrant reds, electric blues, and sunny yellows, I feel a surge of passion and vitality. These colors evoke memories of sunsets over the ocean, the warmth of a summer day, and the intensity of love. They challenge me to break free from the mundane and embrace the extraordinary. Whether it’s a fiery abstract or a whimsical landscape, these hues dance together, creating a visual melody that resonates with my soul. heartscapepaintings.com

I paint the forest. And I try to stay true to the colours I see there: the myriad of restorative blessed greens, so alive; grounded by the earthy browns; set off by bright flashes of flower and berry; and always with that infinite blue or the soft grey of cloud above. These colours, the colours of Nature, heal and uplift, soothe and enliven, nourishing us on all levels —body, mind and spirit. barbarabrownart.com

Color has always fascinated me! It only takes one small stroke to change the whole feel of a painting. As an abstract artist, I use color primarily, not just because I love it, but to set a mood. Complimentary colors provide the most impact so I use those in focal points. It’s an endless, joy filled experiment! sharongrimesart.com
Joe Stavec
Color is instrumental to evoke subconscious realms and dreamlike atmospheres in my surreal paintings. Surrealism, as an artistic movement, aims to explore the unconscious mind and the irrational aspects of our human experience. My color palette is used to express my thoughts and dreams in visually captivating, unexpected and thought-provoking context. By manipulating color in unconventional ways, I try to create artworks that defy logic and invite viewers to take time to enjoy and explore the depths of their own imagination. saatchiart.com/joestavec
Andre Chatelain
For me, the choice of colours, shades and tones is a very powerful tool to reach people hearts and provoking a specific emotion or a special feeling. It also says a lot about me to the viewers. How I choose and apply the colours at any point in time shows how I was feeling when I created each painting. I paint the beauties of the world while sharing the story of my life right there on the canvas. andrechatelain.com

Color can swing and sway the mind like a distant tune whispered on the wind. Every artist has a favorite color palette. Mine includes hues both richly saturated and softly muted inviting the eye to stay a while. When I use certain color combinations, the painting seems to sing to me. At that moment I know it is right and I have created an emotional oasis where the soul can pause, reflect, recharge. This is healing. leannefinkart.com

Paintings begin in my heart, then on my palette. Big dollops of warm colors sit across from their cool complements, whites and darks at either end. I am grateful as they begin to mix and uplift each other. What a thrill to lay one color next to another on a surface, to see how they dance and vibrate, how they change and shapeshift. Color brings to my life and work something that has never before existed, the possibilities are endless. paulaborsetti.com
Chalda Maloff
I frequently employ an assertive palette of strongly saturated hues, which I believe are universally gratifying. I incorporate the illusion of backlighting to bring these elements into high relief. To further invigorate the frame, I introduce fleeting doses of dissonant color which are often nearly subliminal. My goal is to leave the viewer energized, perhaps with a heightened awareness of the nuance of passing moments. My themes are survival, resilience, and exhilaration in the face of transience. chalda.com

My current work is an expressive response to and celebration of the extraordinary light, colour and overwhelming space that I experience on a daily basis in my unique prairie environment with its inherent horizontal emphasis. The exceptional colour sense of the indigenous Blackfeet has also influenced me and recent trips to Peru with its rich Inca heritage and vibrant colouration has resulted in intensified and saturated hues in my imagery. There is truly a healing power in colour that positively influences both the individual and the collective! psnielsen.com

I associate colors with emotions and states of being. Yellow makes me happy. Blue and certain shades of green calm me. Purple evokes royalty, while orange screams playfulness. Shades of brown speak of the earth. Bright colors arranged freely show my joy and happiness. or evoke fun and whimsy. Darker shades of flowers and leaves punctuated by brighter subjects or unexpected garden objects can show reflection or whimsy. My scanner photographs show my emotions on any given day. sandyscan.com

In nature the light and shadows are always forming complex shapes, textures, patterns and colors. As an artist, I capture these elements in my paintings. With paint and brush, I am also adding strong graphic contrasts and careful detail to the very special moment in time. I express my appreciation for nature and its many colors. tanisbula.com

Color, a universal language that transcends words, plays a pivotal role in my artwork. I explore the interconnection between the ancient art of kintsugi, the spiritual world of chakras, and the emotional resonance of color. For instance, violet and white symbolize the crown chakra, our connection to the divine and spiritual enlightenment. Yellow embodies the solar plexus chakra, signifying self-confidence and personal power. rajulshahart.com

Color inspires my paintings to come alive in my mind and heart of what I am saying to others. It’s not just the color I see, but the emotional response it triggers in my mind as well. Color in my paintings is the pathway of how I will perceive the art I am viewing and creating. The colors in my paintings speak to me in a way that words cannot. It’s a therapy that soothes the soul. dgrickmanart.com

Color is of prime importance in my work. It represents the light reflected in each one of us. My intention is to inspire an opening to consciousness, to presence and greater awareness. In the paintings, I start from the center of concentric circles, structures and lines. Though seemingly simple, it is the quintessence of a greater reality, quiet yet dynamic. I feel it as visual poetry where color and texture can transmit feelings, emotions and energy. evabreitfuss.space
Peter N. Van Giesen
I see color everywhere and nature teaches me that all colors belong together. In particular twilight captures my spirit in the continual blaze of colors that sweep across the skies both morning and evening. The interconnected aura of nature energies me to create memories of the sensations I feel as I stand in awe of the majestic power of color. peternvangiesen.com

As a mobile photographer I look at the natural, mostly botanical, world from an unusual perspective. Initially drawn in by bold color, I am most interested in capturing organically occurring hues, patterns and shapes; therefore, my photography verges on the abstract or painterly, an illustrative rather than literal medium. I find creative inspiration everywhere and love the spontaneity of being able to use my phone to interpret and share my vision of our colorful world. amr-photography.com

From the time of my childhood in rural Columbus, Ohio, to my life here in New Mexico, color has always been a ruler in my psyche. Never knowing what will appear when I start painting and seeing the unexpected appear with elements of the known gives me great pleasure. On the darkest of days of which there are few here in NM, light and color evolve on the canvas brightening my spirit and hopefully those of my viewers. charlotteshroyer.com

Each color vibrates at a different frequency which not only invokes specific emotional responses, but energetic resonances in the viewer. When I create art, it is to inspire healing visually and energetically. The colors and marks layer over one another, inviting viewers to embark on an intricate meditative journey. In addition to the colors of the paint, the colors of powdered ancient healing stones subtly emit frequencies, connecting the art and viewer to the earth. brittmichaelian.com

For the past few years, I’ve been focusing on exploring on everyday objects portrayed in contrasting light and dark settings. I celebrate nature, beauty, and color, as they infuse my work with energy and positivity. Through my art, I aim to encourage viewers to contemplate daily life and discover the beauty found in the ordinary things that surround us. deboralevyart.com

I am inspired and renewed by the beauty and serenity of the Caribbean. I am putting forth a window into this all-encompassing multi-sensual experience using vivid colors and geometric patterns that depict the wildness of this ecosystem. I have been able to create these works by absorbing the exhilarating primal beauty that constitutes this environment and channeling those feelings into vibrant / metallic watercolors. My hope is viewers will respect these wondrous untouched works of nature and do their part to preserve it. gailbach-art.com

Color is a universal language that has the power to calm, delight, heal, and soothe. As artists, we immerse ourselves in nature’s vibrant tapestry, studying its hues and textures firsthand. We create mandala-like images of our photos amplifying the inherent colors to evoke the profound sense of peace and harmony of nature’s own artistry. Our ultimate aspiration is for our work to serve as a conduit, allowing others to immerse themselves in the healing and transformative power of color. dickandrosanne.com
Susanna Patras
Color serves as a distinct artistic language within my abstract photography, while acknowledging its healing qualities beyond visual aesthetics. Through vibrant hues and subtle tones, I rely on color to convey emotions, energy, and subjective experiences, breaking away from the confines of realism and embracing a more experimental and visually engaging approach. Therefore, in my compositions, color emerges as a conduit for articulating my innermost thoughts, inviting viewers to participate in shaping the narrative. patrasphotography.com

Color is my favorite muse, both stirring creativity and soothing the soul in my photographic art. From the fiery passion of sunsets to the calming embrace of cool blues, hues guide my lens and heal my spirit. Each shade spins tales of emotion, crafting narratives that resonate with me deeply. I find solace and inspiration, infusing my work with both the vibrancy of life and the gentle touch of therapeutic art, one frame at a time. bethsheridan.com

My color palette often reflects the colors of the city; I generally use variations of rich browns, blues and greys punctuated by brighter colors of greens, reds, oranges and yellows depending on additional subject matter, time of day, perspective, shading, etc. and depending on the mood I’m in at the time. Flexibility is the key. elliotappelpaints.com

When I paint I am drawn to a palette of colours, divine sources channel energy and frequencies through me and guide my hands to create all that is beautiful from and for the soul. I never know what I am going to paint or who it is for. I go into a trance like state and am not aware of the passage of time or what realm I travel to. moniquejdufourhealingart.com

In most of my paintings, I choose to use saturated colors because I love the way it makes my painting look. I have never been a fan of pastel colors nor dull muddy paintings. I remember looking at Gauguin’s paintings for the first time in my Humanities textbook, and totally falling in love with the colors he used. I decided that moment onwards to use rich saturated colors in my paintings too. I love how they make me feel. Happy and energized. roopadudley.com
Dorit Brauer
I consider the creation of art a sacred ritual; I meditate prior to the artistic expression on the canvas and love to move and dance in-between the application of layers of oil paint, allowing my spontaneity and intuition to flow. My color choices are based on metaphysical color vibration theory and how different hues resonate with the energy centers in the human body creating balance and peace, e.g. I emphasize blue for self-expression and speaking one’s own truth, red for grounding and yellow for self-respect and self-esteem. doritbrauer.com

I paint with acrylics on canvas and love vibrant colors, which give me energy. Nature is my greatest source of inspiration. The beautiful colors in nature have a powerful influence on humans. It makes me happy when my paintings heighten the awareness of the viewers to celebrate the infinite beauty of nature and the importance of taking care of our world. My landscapes invite viewers to enjoy moments of peace and serenity through the connection to nature. Nature, with its beautiful colors, heals and restores! sandyiseli.com

In my artistic exploration, I focus on the compelling impact of contemporary complementary colors as a fundamental element of art. The deliberate use of these paired hues not only serves as a visual delight but also acts as a strategic tool to elevate the viewer’s experience. By harnessing the power of complementary colors, I aim to make the palette come alive, injecting energy and vitality into the artistic narrative. kaseyjones.net
Maureen McCabe
In my abstract paintings, I use color to explore energy, light, and the depths of space. My palette consists of iridescent colors that evoke earthly and otherworldly terrain. I pour, drip, and sculpt the surface of each painting using a mix of molding paste and acrylic paint with luminous hues. Thick with impasto, each surface reflects and radiates light, so the finished works change as the viewer moves around them. maureenmccabe.art
Judy Hatlen
I’m inspired by the colors of nature, and in my art, I want to show the vast variety present in all aspects. It’s about the way the variation in color shapes the details in a single leaf, flower, or butterfly, or in a forest as the light plays on the foliage creating different values and intensities. judysartco.com
Jane Foley Ferraro
My passion in painting is finding emotion and mood in landscapes or seascapes through the sensitive use of color. My process is one of call and response as each color blends with another and builds to something more as the work progresses and I discover where the painting is taking me. I describe my style as intuitive expressionism. Color is an outpouring of my subconscious. It is the depth of water, the eternity of sky, the condition of our souls. janefoleyferraro.com
Tommy B. McDonell
Color has been a part of my life forever. From the home I grew up in, to my car, and now in my art. Some of the colors I use in flowers are spontaneous. My aim is that these paintings will allow the viewer to feel special. The more colors I use allows people to see the painting differently each time. To me this is important in order for the person to be both comfortable and stronger within themselves. leapforartnc.com
D Yael Kelley
As an organic expressionist, it is the use of strong, saturated color and the multiple layering of transparent oil gazes that are the very core of my work. Color impacts directly. It requires no explanation. It taps into our deepest psyche. It always evokes a response. Color can heal, comfort and calm or mystify, and electrify us. Where the colors take me and what my paintings evolve into, always feels like alchemy. dyaelkelley.com

In my practice I am constantly exploring new techniques. I allow myself to follow my own intuition and be led by my emotional response to a scene. The vibrant colors I work with are also derived from nature, from the hyperbolic hues of flowers to the intense coloration of minerals. Each chroma has its own resonance and through their juxtapositions I can develop a complex emotional landscape. wallitschart

Color inspires me to capture emotions and experiences through art. Vibrant hues express joy and energy, while muted tones convey calm and contemplation. Playing with color allows me to set moods, create depth, and evoke feelings in the viewer. Each painting is an exploration of color’s power to communicate the intangible – memories, dreams, love, loss. Color is my tool for transforming canvases into landscapes of the soul, inviting others into my personal journey of expression and meaning. vasutolia.art

I search the markets and bazaars of Mexico, Guatemala, and elsewhere for folk art objects –- masks, carved wooden animals, papier mache figures, children’s toys — to bring back to New York to photograph and paint. Color is very important — the brighter and the more eye-catching the patterns are on these objects the better. Objects that have been used or otherwise look like they’ve had a life (i.e., been part of religious festivities) draw my attention. My paintings are always a unique blend of reality, fantasy, and autobiography. barbararachkoscoloreddust.com

Color is the basic form of impressionism which I first studied. I have been involved with color in my dress, compositions and the sensation of mood and values that brought me into using my same palette of color into my abstraction. karenhs.com

Colors have been a focal point of my exploration for years because of their profound impact on our emotions, behaviors, and mental state. Their ability to offer healing properties, calm our nerves, and ignite inspiration is truly remarkable. In creating my art, colors play a pivotal role in evoking feelings, triggering memories, and enhancing creativity. Warm shades elicit enthusiasm and intensity, while cool tones evoke tranquility and peace. The therapeutic influence of color in art is both powerful and extensive. frantisekstrouhal.com

I love producing a mood through my love of color, choice of subject matter, and the light in my paintings. The infusion of colorful and textured collage materials from Nepal, Thailand and Japan, along with handmade wood cutouts, imparts a unique interpretation to mainstream objects. My desire is to offer a respite from the responsibilities of life by engaging the viewer through cheerful images in a whimsical style. I view Art as a healing vessel where its abilities to manifest change brings hope and harmony to those who patiently await. lisafreidus.com

My love of color has been with me forever and I love to explore it in my art. Sometimes it helps me tell a story. Other times it’s my emotional response to what’s happening in my life — the pandemic, processing grief, visiting beautiful spots in nature, the joyful arrival of Spring. Color evokes moods and emotions. It helped me balance many years as a psychotherapist by continuing to renew my sense of curiosity, playfulness and inner joy that is available no matter what happens. judithrohrer.net

Color and lines are emphasized along with geometric shapes, primarily squares, rectangles and triangles. The shapes and colors together have specific symbolic and psychological affect on the viewer. Using unorthodox camera techniques, the formal elements are transformed to create unique images that bare no reference to the natural world. The interaction of color and shapes creates an illusion of chaos, but yet at the same time, intimates intrinsic feelings of conformity, warmth and peacefulness. Color, form, shape, and line become my subject speaking to the viewer with a new, independent voice. amroseartphotography.com
Mary Chaplin
The flowers in my garden are my inexhaustible source of inspiration. Each color, each shape, each feature expresses a palpable emotion. On every white canvas I prefer to show a wonderful untouched image of the world in color rather than its shades of grey. I invite viewers of my art to immerse themselves in a world of colors. I like them to realize how much our planet is great, full of colors, marvelous and so precious they can also be inspired to see it like that in everyday life! mary-chaplin.com/painter
Color-Inspired Art & Quotes From Master Artists
Henri Matisse
Colour helps to express light, not the physical phenomenon, but the only light that really exists, that in the artist’s brain. The chief aim of color should be to serve expression as well as possible. I put down my colors without a preconceived plan. If at the first step and perhaps without my being conscious of it one tone has particularly pleased me, more often then not when the picture is finished, I will notice that I have respected this tone while I have progressively altered and transformed the others. I discover the quality of colors in a purely instinctive way. ~ Henri Matisse
Sonia Delaunay
One who knows how to appreciate color relationships, the influence of one color with another, their contrasts and dissonances, is promised an infinite variety of images. ~ Sonia Delaunay
Claude Monet
Color is my day long obsession, joy and torment. When you go out to paint, try to forget what objects you have before you, a tree, a house, a field or whatever. Merely think here is a little square of blue, here an oblong of pink, here a streak of yellow, and paint it just as it looks to you, the exact color and shape. ~ Claude Monet
Georgia O’Keeffe
I found I could say things with colors that I could not say in any other way, things for which I had no words. ~ Georgia O’Keeffe
Vincent van Gogh
Instead of trying to reproduce exactly what I see before me, I make more arbitrary use of colour to express myself more forcefully … To express the love of two lovers by the marriage of two complementary colours … To express the thought of a brow by the radiance of a light tone against a dark background. To express hope by some star. Someone’s passion by the radiance of the setting sun… There is no blue without yellow and without orange. ~ Vincent van Gogh
Paul Gauguin
“Color! What a deep and mysterious language. It is the language of dreams.” ~ Paul Gauguin
Pablo Picasso
Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions. Some painters transform the sun into a yellow spot, others transform a yellow spot into the sun. ~ Pablo Picasso
Wassily Kandinsky
Color hides a power still unknown but real, which acts on every part of the human body. Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul. ~ Wassily Kandinsky
Joan Miro
Joan Miro created “The Smile of the Flamboyant Wings” with this in mind: “I try to apply colors like words that shape poems, like notes that shape music.”

Who doesn’t need a little color in their lives? We all need it to perk us up when feeling catatonic. Ok maybe a bit dramatic, but that’s why colored TV was invented! Renee, this is a fabulous exhibition and proud to be part of it. I enjoy viewing all the diverse styles and art mediums. Congrats to you and the artists. 🥰
