Message from Renee Phillips, Curator, Founder & Director of Manhattan Arts International and The Healing Power of ART & ARTISTS: I am honored and delighted to present this exhibition. For more than 20 years I have curated exhibitions on the theme of Nature throughout NYC and on our two websites. The purpose is to promote superior artists from around the world who create works of art that convey the many beautiful physical aspects of nature as well as its emotive, symbolic, and healing qualities. Our “Nature” exhibitions also raise awareness about the importance of our responsibility to celebrate, respect and protect our natural environment.

Bren Sibilsky
My muse is nature. It feeds me creatively, physically and spiritually. My time with nature refuels me. It drives my artistic desire, creating visions inspired by the ultimate master artist, God. I enjoy the companions I meet there and spend time with birds, frogs, caterpillars, butterflies… and my cat likes to be the tour guide. Karen Johnston
Robert Frost wisely noted, “The best way out is always through.” I believe this holds true in both life and art. Moving directly through the center of our heaviest challenges presents its own reward and sense of accomplishment. My painting, ‘Healing Path’, is a light-hearted celebration of that very journey. Nancy Reyner
This painting called Horizon, uses layers of acrylic and silver leaf on panel, worked and reworked until the surface held both movement and stillness. The water churns and catches light while the mountains sit quiet above it, dissolving into mist. I’m drawn to that edge between forming and breaking apart—how a shape holds together only for a moment before shifting into something else. The silver leaf lets the painting change with the light in the room.

Poul S. Nielsen
My work titled “Atmospheric Probabilities” is an expressive response to and celebration of the extraordinary light and colour that I experience on a daily basis in my unique prairie environment. The exceptional colour of the indigenous Blackfoot has influenced me and recent trips to Peru with its vibrant colouration has resulted in intensified and saturated hues.

Nature renews my spirit. In my images, I love to transform the natural world into an ethereal place offering stillness and serenity. I often create composite images layering a natural setting together with a female figure to express how I feel when I go to nature to find peace and renewal. Rajul Shah
My art presents the philosophy of Kintsugi supported with chakric symbolism. This work represents the spiritual energy I have experienced while enjoying the sunsets around Santa Fe, NM. The warm hues of the setting sun interacting with the coolness of the moonrise fusing with the Terracotta earth present a prism of purples and blues. I have traveled many places and seen many sunsets. Santa Fe is the only place I have “spiritually experienced” a sunset.

“Fire Lion” emerged from my fascination with fractal flames — those living geometries of light. I envisioned the Lion of Judah reimagined through radiant, sacred fractals, each strand of fur transformed into glowing scripture. Iridescent, refractive paints catch the light like embers of revelation, making the lion feel both ancient and newly ignited. This artwork channels biblical symbolism, spiritual ferocity, and luminous wonder, inviting viewers into a moment of awe.

Tanis Bula
On vacation with my daughter we saw an incredible display of rhododendron. When I saw the light coming from behind the rhododendron flowers, I knew it would make a painting. The flowers in light contrasted with the flowers in shadow. The incredible array of blue and purple colors across the flowers were the colors that matched my paint palette. I could hardly wait to put the paint on paper.

Mark Levin
The Ohio Sycamore Seed sculpture is inspired by one of nature’s most elegant inventions — the winged seed that spins through the air in search of new ground. Often called a helicopter seed, it has a simple form that achieves a remarkable balance of efficiency, movement, and beauty. I was drawn to the way the seed appears both delicate and purposeful, carried by wind yet precisely engineered by nature.

Bob Crelin
A “portrait” inspired by the striking florets of the Centaurea Stoebe (Knapweed), a wildflower in vivid tones of violet and fuchsia that graced my memories of midsummer countrysides. This work presents an intimate composition with visual depth, faithfully capturing the flower’s fascinating metamorphosis set against a pebbled river-rock landscape.

Barbara Brown
A contemplation of spiders brings us to the symbolism of their webs—to mother spider in ancient nature-based cultures spinning the webs of life—and thus to the interconnectivity of all of creation. The slightest of touches anywhere on the finely spun silken strands is felt throughout the entire web, and we learn that this is a metaphor—the smallest of any of our actions will reverberate throughout the entirety of all that is.

Jennifer Lynne Roberts
This piece is inspired by the shifts and changes of earth and sky. Nothing is constant; it is unsettled and can feel tenuous. Using house paint, acrylics, and heavily layered papers, I wanted to capture the feeling of a restless geological stratification beneath turbulent, heavy skies. Inspired by my time in Santa Fe, I used a fiery palette and raw texture to evoke the visceral, elemental relationship between the vibrant sediment beneath us and the climate above.

Jodie Brenner
“Sakari” is part of my ongoing Wild Mare Series, she’s from the Little Book Cliffs Wild Horse Range in Grand Junction, Colorado. I’m inspired by the quiet strength, wisdom, and deep family bonds of these amazing mares. Many face displacement and loss through roundups that separate families. Through watercolor, I wish to bring awareness to what they endure. I want their presence to be felt and their stories remembered. Sakari represents resilience, sacred connection, and the healing power of horse.

One evening as I walked along a semi urban nature trail I came upon a sight of a beautiful tree and a soothing and enchanted light from the moon and I knew in that moment that I would paint the sight I saw that evening.

Marina Syntelis
“Out of Chaos” reflects my direct connection to nature’s raw forces. Observing the sea’s wild, undefined turbulence, I wanted to capture how nature can bring forth order and light. The light breaking through the clouds emerged unexpectedly as I painted, adding a different meaning to the painting. Working intuitively on my hand-prepared cotton canvas, I sought to express how unexpected light emerges from the storm to spark purpose, direction and hope.

Lis Zadravec
Rumspringa literally means running around, which fox kits do a lot of. In Amish culture it is a tradition before making adult choices. I feel there is a discussion in the eyes of these two, which way to turn. In the end, they are going to grow up into foxes anyway.

I visited Deer Park while on a photography tour of the Olympic Peninsula. Our small group arrived before sunrise, and we chose our spots to capture the rising sun and the glorious sky above the towns of Port Angeles and Sequim.
Frances Gunther
This painting was inspired by a trip to Giverny, France, home of Claude Monet. His land and home are just beautiful and visitors walk around the area, in awe of the flowers, lush trees, pond’s reflections and shrubs. Two people are standing on the bridge, overlooking this lush pond that echoes the foliage. It is a fall day and the weather is serene. I photographed this experience and from my photos, I painted the scene as I saw it.

Charles N. Murphey
While on a photo shoot exploring slot canyons in Arizona, I came across this rock formation that immediately caught my interest for its curved textured walls along with hues of orange and lavender. It wasn’t until reviewing images just captured that I realized my subconscious attraction to the scene was due in large part to it closely resembling a cresting ocean wave. In this image, however, the wave happens to be in the desert southwest and is sculpted in rock!

This is a painting of a stream that runs off the hills in the Poisoned Glen in Donegal, Ireland. I wanted to capture the wild beauty and atmosphere of where my partner comes from. Editor’s note: Poisoned Glen likely gets its name from a simple translation error by English mapmakers who mistook the Irish word for heaven.

My inspiration for the waterfall painting was the unusual way the water cascaded down the cliff. The water came down and hit ledges and then continued down to the pond. The vegetation on the wall was interesting as well. Also the reflections in the water also intrigued me. Water can be transparent, translucent, reflective, and refractive depending on your point of view.

Created from images of live coral, Piercing the Deep reveals the vibrant movement of a complex aquatic ecosystem threatened by development and human intervention. Laminated photographs and diverse materials form sculptural organic shapes, merging nature with manufactured objects. Copper screen evokes the skeletal remains of dying coral, while the spiral symbolizes drilling and exploitation. As ocean-floor mining expands without meaningful environmental review or global standards, these irreplaceable ecosystems face even greater risk.

Every line, shape, color, and shade originates in Nature. I was inspired to draw this interconnected scene, an octopus in the sky, a wolf, a parrot, a lizard on a rock, a giraffe, a kangaroo, under a shining yellow sun, because it feels true to our moment. These creatures don’t share a habitat, yet here they coexist, reminding me how deeply everything is linked. All of my lumen prints are inspired by traces of nature left behind. I capture the dignity of what is fragile, overlooked, or disappearing. Lumen printing is a cameraless 19th-century photographic process that uses the sun and black-and-white photographic paper to create ethereal botanical prints. I watch for moments like this often, egrets flaring pristine plumage against a fading sky, a quiet awe that feels both simple and profound. After my son’s death, I used art to help me heal. This is where I imagined my son Scott living after leaving our world. Through my art, I honor his memory and aim to support others who struggle with depression, PTSD, and addiction. The American bison is both iconic and sacred, symbolizing strength, power, resilience, and survival. The creature’s massive bulk is its own unique beauty. A photographer friend, with access to a bison preserve in Oklahoma, graciously gave me permission to use his photograph as a source. I love the world, and not just one area. One of my biggest fears is global warming. I think it’s important to educate our citizens about the dangers of greenhouse gasses as well as the concentration of carbon dioxide which makes all of us vulnerable to rising waters. At one point, the melting of ice will affect each and every one of us. My greatest wish is for our country to work with others to reverse these trends.

I created Blue Cluster by observing how minerals, crystals, and geological formations emerge through pressure, accumulation, and time. The layered glass, resin, and mineral pigments suggest a living formation suspended between the depths of the ocean and the interior of the earth. I am drawn to blue as a color of water, distance, and restoration. The work reflects my belief that transformation can produce both strength and unexpected beauty.

Although a confirmed city girl now, I grew up in Ohio, where the sight of wide expanses of turbulent summer skies above flat acreage of tasseled corn was a common one. On a recent visit, I was struck by the openness of this field of standing summer corn, the vastness of the sky and the intensity of blues and greens in full summer heat. Tracy Ellyn
The Surrealists of the 1920s used double photography, long before computers or Photoshop, in order to create the impossible, the dreamlike, the texture and playfulness. I am from the old school of handmade photography, no photoshop, naturally layered. On a playful couple of days, I photographed a rock garden, and some plants I loved. The outcome of the double layered photography was a joyful, impossible fantasy-scape series of nature seemingly made of rocks. A spontaneous fantasy, just as art should be.

Jay Walmsley
In the natural world, we see many repeating patterns. One is the Fibonacci spiral, which approximates the golden ratio, creating structures that appear balanced and visually appealing while being ecologically resource-efficient. While researching this, I came across photographs of ammonite fossils. Their appeal was immediate, with amazing crystalline structures formed within the original spirals. I have tried to capture their inherent movement and balance, and the wonderful colour variations.

Noreen Norton
On a trip to Door County, on the coast of Lake Michigan, I became fascinated by the interplay of the rocks, the waves and the wind. It was like they were moving in motion with each other, in a dialog of sorts. The rocks were the foundation, the wind provided power and the water was a gentle participant. It was this experience that Elemental Dialog seeks to bring to life.

Growing up in California’s San Benancio Valley, I developed an early appreciation for nature through long walks among fields of wild poppies and lupines. Being outdoors was my happy place; my safe place. These formative experiences inform my work. Here, in a tangle of wild growth, we find purple foxgloves and pink lupines, white daisies and orange posies, all in different sizes. All our different shapes and sizes are beautiful together when we allow ourselves to see them!

I was drawn to the contrast between fractured, barren terrain and flowers appearing within it, and to the idea that something beautiful can emerge from loss and destruction. The work reflects on the vulnerability of the natural world and its capacity for resilience, renewal, and regeneration even after profound change.
