Judy’s interest in art began at the age of three when her mother showed her how to draw stick figures. She soon began teaching herself to add clothing, facial expressions, and movement in order to tell stories through drawing. From that point on, art occupied much of her time and imagination.
She attended the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater from 1973 to 1977, graduating cum laude with a BSE in Art Education. After marrying shortly after graduation, she raised three daughters — Hannah, Elizabeth, and Leah — while continuing to develop her artwork and taking on occasional commissions.
Judy later taught art in both private and public schools, joining the Janesville School District full-time in 1990 and teaching until her retirement in 2017, when she returned to pursuing her own work full time.

Judy’s proficient and healing use of color is undeniable for which she has received widespread praise. You will find Judy’s artwork in several articles on this website related to color including “A Healing Touch of Red in Art by Members and Masters”, , “The Healing Color of Purple in Art by Artists from Our Website”.and “The Healing Glow of Pink in Art by Artist Members, Famous Artists, and More”
She is also featured in the articles “Fantastic Flora and Fauna” and “Artists Share Their First Experiences with Creativity”.

Judy Hatlen’s Artist’s Statement: I focus on creating artwork that contributes to healing environments. Research shows that visual surroundings can influence mental and emotional well-being, which in turn affects physical health. Because of this, I am drawn to subjects that evoke peace and positive memories, particularly imagery from the natural world. Through detailed views of nature’s beauty and scenes of rural life, my work invites viewers to slow down and step away from the pace of modern life. By pausing to observe and reflect, I hope viewers experience a sense of calm and renewal through the quiet intricacy of God’s creation.

Fascinating Facts About Judy: While traveling between schools in the Janesville District, I became the first art teacher in the area to video record my art demonstrations up close, and project them on the big screen to make sure they could be clearly seen by students.
