#GivingTuesday 2021

By Renee Phillips Leave a Comment

Transforming Communities and Improving Lives Worldwide

#GivingTuesday was started in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y — a cultural center in New York City, NY. According to the program, what happened was, “a team of influencers and founding partners joined forces — collaborating across sectors, offering expertise and working tirelessly — to launch #GivingTuesday and have continued to shape, grow and strengthen the movement.”The movement has become a global phenomenon as it transforms communities and improves lives. #GivingTuesday now connects more than 30,000 partners in the U.S. and communities in more than 68 countries. The phenomenal reach and impact has increased donations and behavior change. In 2020, at least $2.47 Billion were donated in twenty-four hours in the U.S. alone, with 13% of the adult population participating by offering gifts of time, voice, skills, goods, and money, as well as countless acts of kindness inspired by the movement.

Visit the “GivingTuesday website where you can download its toolkit for ideas on how to participate in #GivingTuesday. You will also find messages you can copy, paste and share via social media or email. Find ways to encourage your family and friends to participate in this positive global movement.

“We can do no great things — only small things with great love.” ~ Mother Teresa

“No Act of Kindness, however small, is ever wasted.” ~ Aesop

Become a part of a global celebration — a new tradition of generosity in a world where so much negativity is broadcast at a high volume. And, remember, there is never a donation of time, money, or other items or deed that is too small when given with loving kindness.Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community while also making a difference. It gives you the opportunity to meet new people, as well as gain new skills while doing something worthwhile.

A Few Ideas

* Reach out to help your community. Donate cash funds or non-perishable food and goods and essential items to those in need.
* Donate your skills and time to an individual or needy charity.
* Call your favorite organizations and ask them what they need.
* Consider donating items to a women’s shelter such as toiletries, clothing and food, art/art supplies and magazines.
* Collect new toys and donate them to a hospital’s children’s ward to those spending the holidays in the hospital.
* If you’re an animal lover contact an animal shelter and ask if they need food for the animals or money to cover the costs of boarding.

Consider making #GivingTuesday a Weekly Activity!

NYC Installs “Giving Machines”

New York City has installed “Giving Machines” that allow passersby to make a donation to a nonprofit. Each Giving Machine includes items from global and local charities such as clean water, health care services, shelter, bedding, text books, and more. After making a purchase, the Giving Machine dispenses a card to the donor which features an image and description of the donation. 100% of each donation goes to charity.

You can find a Giving Machine at 1 Rockefeller Plaza, between 48th and 49th Streets, just south of the famed Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.

The first “Giving Machine” to be installed was in 2017 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Currently, you can find them in 10 different cities in the U.S.
