Poul S. Nielsen Creates Illuminating “Atmospheric Probabilities” in Pastel

Poul S. Nielsen is a masterful contemporary Color Field artist who creates illuminating and meditative paintings in pastel. His vast, spacious and vaporous “Atmospheric Probabilities” are ephemeral and metaphysical.

Poul’s awe-inspiring pastels transport us beyond physical and cognitive limitations and levels of consciousness.

Through Poul’s art we enter a transcendent, blissful world and encounter the magical, mystical healing elements in nature. Beyond capturing the many ethereal nuances that exist in our vast and expansive physical realm, Poul’s glorious art satiates our yearning for tranquility and quietude. It also enlightens our quest for fulfilling our aspirations.

Poul’s light-filled prairie surroundings in Canada and trips to Peru with its vibrant heritage have served as inspiration for his palette which he infuses with the knowledge of the emotive and neurological impact colors have on us.

As a Color Field painter Poul focuses on color and form using a minimal and optical non-representational painting approach. In his carefully planned compositions, he manages his space as an energizing vibrational force, which imbues his art with a powerful healing modality.

Poul places his forms with poetic virtuosity and superb innovation. Analogous and complementary colors and their co-existing relationships coalesce in harmony and balance. His images are enlivened with saturated and blended hues, subtle and soft gradations, contrasting transitions, and smoothly painted surfaces.

Poul’s use of horizontal bands of colors suggests a continuum – a vista that appears to extend beyond the edges of the paper into infinity. His accents of thin white lines separate and define the areas. They add structure and containment to the overall design and serve as resting points for us to pause and reflect.

Prior to creating his renowned pastel “Atmospheric Probabilities” Poul developed proficiency in other areas such as mastering tonal ranges in realistic drawings in graphite on paper. These skills transitioned perfectly into his pastels.

Poul’s breathtaking works of art awaken a myriad of primordial visual and visceral sensations. He inspires us to embrace the splendor that exists in our world.
